JLW Headstone

"Lee" was born in Outlook, WA and reared on a dairy farm in Snohomish, WA.   He joined the Army Reserve soon after High School and then the U.S. Army Air Corps when the war broke out.   He married Georgiana Meredith Brown of San Francisco, CA Jan. 24, 1944; (on his 26th birthday.)   Soon after, he was posted to Wattisham, England as a P-38-J "Lightning" pilot with the 479th Fighter Group of the US 8th Air Force.   To see a picture of his plane, click "Sleepy Time Gal".   He was KIA on Aug. 15, 1944 when he was shot down near Uffelte, Holland while returning from a bomber escort mission over Germany.   His remains were buried in the Havelte Cemetery near Zwolle, Holland on Aug. 17, 1944 and later moved to the US Military Cemetary Maargarten near Maastrict, Netherlands.   His remains were then moved to Arlington National Cemetary, Section 34, #3960 in 1948.    At that time he was KIA, Georgiana was pregnant with their son, who was born 4 months later on Dec. 18, 1944.   The son was named the same James Leland Wallace after his father, and is now known as , owner of this web page.
